The pressure to reduce carbon emissions is accelerating the global packaging industry shift faster than ever. According to the Smithers 2026 report, the green packaging market will reach USD 393 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 5.4%. In Vietnam, major FDI buyers including Walmart, Costco, and IKEA have set specific requirements: from 2025, all packaging must achieve at least 30% recycled content; by 2030, 100%.
As a packaging manufacturer for major export brands, UNI-PACK has proactively invested in the following 5 green material lines — ready to meet the strictest requirements of international clients.
1. PCR — Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic
Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic is recycled from household waste after consumer use. UNI-PACK currently supplies PCR bags with up to 80% recycled content, maintaining the same durability and transparency as virgin plastic. Suitable applications: garment packaging, premium shopping bags, accessory pouches.
Benefits: 60-70% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to virgin plastic, meeting Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements in the EU and US.
2. PLA — Biodegradable Bioplastic
Polylactic Acid (PLA) is produced from corn or sugarcane starch. Under industrial conditions (60 degree Celsius, high humidity), PLA fully decomposes within 90-180 days. UNI-PACK supplies PLA bags that are soft, highly glossy, and offset-printable — ideal for dry food packaging, cosmetics, and toys.
3. Mycelium — Mushroom-Based Packaging
Mycelium (mushroom roots) combined with agricultural by-products forms a rigid, lightweight material that replaces traditional EPS foam. It decomposes completely within 30-45 days in natural environments. UNI-PACK is currently running pilots with electronics and glassware clients.
4. Bagasse — Food Packaging from Sugarcane
Bagasse (sugarcane pulp) is a by-product of sugar extraction. UNI-PACK produces bagasse trays, plates, and cups that withstand temperatures up to 100 degree Celsius for hot food. Particularly suitable for F&B chains transitioning away from EPS foam and PP plastic.
5. FSC Recycled Paper + Water-Based Flexo Ink
The combination of FSC-recycled paper (Forest Stewardship Council) and water-based flexo ink creates 100% recyclable, non-toxic carton boxes. This is UNI-PACK new flagship product line, certified as meeting green packaging standards by KOHL’S and FILA.
Conclusion
Going green is no longer optional — it is essential. Vietnamese manufacturers have a major opportunity if they act early. UNI-PACK offers free consulting to clients looking to transition from traditional to green packaging — including current state assessment, solution proposals, sample testing, and mass production.
