MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is one of the first questions when contacting a packaging manufacturer. Understanding MOQ helps businesses plan orders correctly and avoid unexpected costs.
Why does MOQ exist?
MOQ exists for three production reasons:
- Machine setup cost – every spec change requires flexo and offset machines to be recalibrated; small orders cannot recover this cost.
- Material efficiency – carton paper and poly resin both come in large rolls; small orders create excessive waste.
- Production efficiency – production lines run most efficiently when one spec runs continuously for an extended period.
Typical UNI-PACK MOQ
- Standard carton boxes – from 500 boxes per spec.
- Multi-color flexo cartons – from 2,000 boxes per spec (higher setup cost).
- Plain poly bags – from 10,000 bags per spec.
- Flexo-printed poly bags – from 30,000 bags per spec.
- Offset printed boxes – from 1,000 boxes per spec.
These are reference levels – UNI-PACK can be flexible for long-term customers or special orders.
Tips for ordering below standard MOQ
- Combine multiple specs – if you need different sizes, group them into one order to hit aggregate MOQ.
- Order samples first – UNI-PACK accepts sample production of 100 – 500 units for market testing.
- Annual contracts – split into multiple deliveries per year to hit aggregate MOQ without large warehousing.
- Accept standard specs – common carton sizes have lower MOQ than custom dimensions.
Benefits of ordering above MOQ
- Better pricing – 5 – 15 % savings vs small orders.
- Priority scheduling, faster delivery.
- Ability to request more complex custom printing.
